Practical Action was founded in 1966, as ITDG (the Intermediate Technology Development Group) in UK, by the eminent economist Dr. EF Schumacher to prove that his philosophy of ‘Small is Beautiful’ could bring real and sustainable improvements to people’s lives. With our commitment to poverty reduction, environmental conservation and technology choice we think Practical Action is uniquely placed to contribute to a world free of poverty and technology injustice. ITDGPractical Action is a charity registered in the United Kingdom which works directly in four regions of the developing world – Latin America, East Africa, Southern Africa and South Asia, with particular concentration on Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Peru, Kenya, Sudan and Zimbabwe.
In Bangladesh, the organization started formally in 1990 (Govt. NGOB Registration no. 390, dated : 21-11-1990) with a mission to change lives of people living in poverty through the use and demonstration of appropriate small scale technology. The evolution of the organization since then has been challenging and remarkable. Being technology focused knowledge based organisation, Practical Action-Bangladesh has made remarkable contributions to the development and dissemination of small scale technologies that generate income and employment, contribute to livelihoods security and meet the basic needs of the poor.
